The team behind Store Standards

We started in a Bristol stockroom, counting the same box three times. That is still the problem.

How we got here

Store Standards started in 2021, in the stockroom of a bike shop in Bristol, with a spreadsheet that had been rebuilt four times and still could not say how many medium jackets were on the shelf.

The problem was never the counting. It was that counting happened in one place, and Shopify found out about it somewhere else, hours later, from someone who had not been there. Every store we have worked with since has some version of that gap.

So we build small apps that close it. We do not take client work, we do not run retainers, and we do not build anything we would not use on a Saturday morning with a delivery driver waiting. Everything we make goes on the Shopify App Store, and we live with the reviews.

There are nine of us, and two dogs who came with the office. We answer our own support, we publish our uptime, and we still do a shift in a real stockroom every month, because it is the only reliable way to find out what we got wrong.

    I ran stock control for six bike shops before I wrote any code. I rebuilt the same receiving sheet four times, got fed up, and built this instead.

    I still do one stockroom shift a month.

    I write most of the code that talks to Shopify. Six years on warehouse software taught me to keep a queue boring. Ours has never printed a label twice.

    I own four label printers. I test on the worst one.

    I draw every screen twice. Once the way I want it, once the way it looks at eight in the morning with a van outside. The second one usually wins.

    I look after the ledger that remembers what we have already printed. It is the part that stops a second delivery printing the whole order again.

    I keep a drawer of half-used label rolls.

    I make the barcode on the label scan first time, on cheap thermal paper, at the till. I care a lot about the millimetre either side of it.

    I collect torn supplier labels to test with.

    I pick what we build next by watching people take stock off a pallet. Not by counting feature requests. I say no to nine ideas in ten.

How we build

Our standards

The rules we hold ourselves to, and the reason our apps feel different to use.

    Fast on the shop computer

    Every screen loads in under a second on the old machine behind the till. We test on one.

    Plain words

    No jargon in the interface. If a screen needs a manual, we designed it wrong and we start again.

    Least data possible

    We store what the app needs to work and nothing else. You can export it or delete it whenever you like.

  • 04

    Feels like Shopify

    We build on Shopify Polaris, so our apps look and behave like the admin your team already knows.

  • 05

    It counts, so you do not

    The app keeps its own record of what it has done, so the number it offers you is already right.

    A person, same day

    Support goes to the team that built the thing. Send it during your day and it is answered overnight.
